DELTA AIR HIGHLIGHTS ACTIVITIES FOR DETROIT - LONDON ROUTE
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today outlined comprehensive plans to further promote its route between Detroit and London, which the airline is operating on an emergency exemption granted by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
In a news conference in Dearborn, Al Kolakowski, Delta's senior vice president - sales, disclosed details of the airline's new fares, advertising campaign and marketing activities.
"Delta remains committed to the Detroit to London route and committed to serving it well for the long run," Kolakowski said. "We believe the route presents us with an important opportunity to increase Delta's presence here and offer passengers a competitive travel option. Although traffic in the North Atlantic market in general, and in Detroit specifically, is down during this recessionary period, we recognize the importance of maintaining this daily service to London and continuing our plan of consistent growth in Detroit.
"We are launching a new advertising and marketing campaign and introducing a promotion offering customers a free trip in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda for each round-trip flown on Delta between Detroit and London. Furthermore, Delta is hosting a number of travel agency groups and trade missions both to and from Britain to promote business interest in the Detroit area."
Kolakowski said that, while Delta is not satisfied with the number of passengers utilizing its new London service so far, the carrier is not concerned about the economic prospects for the route. "Delta started this service on short notice, in the middle of the off-peak season, without any advance bookings and at the height of an economic down period when traffic at Detroit and elsewhere was depressed. The service was not promoted greatly and not operated on a daily basis by Pan Am, which previously flew the route.
"Furthermore, there has been a lack of public understanding resulting from the cessation of flights for two weeks after Pan Am's demise and the temporary nature of Delta's operating authority. These factors have depressed Delta's Detroit to London bookings. But as our comprehensive advertising and promotional program takes effect, and when Delta is granted permanent authority on the route, we will see an increase in traffic here."
Kolakowski continued: "We trace our service to the citizens of the metropolitan area back almost 50 years, and Delta looks forward to being a strong presence here well into the future. Contrary to the assertions made by other parties, Delta wants to underscore and reaffirm its commitment to serving the Detroit to London route and to working with the area travel agency community to enhance the competitive service options available for the traveling and shipping public."
A major world airline, Delta serves 220 cities in 34 countries around the globe.
