DELMARVA POWER OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW ENERGY FACILITY

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Delmarva Power (NYSE: DEW) officials today celebrated the opening of the company's new Unit No. 4 at the Hay Road Power Complex.
Unit No. 4 uses a relatively new technology that protects the environment and saves money for customers. The combined cycle operation produces 175 megawatts of electricity without burning any additional fuel. The unit uses the exhaust heat from three existing combustion turbine generating units to make electricity, without incurring additional fuel expense. This process saves customers about $5 million annually.
With the addition of Unit No. 4, Delmarva Power's reserve margin increases to approximately 21 percent, which represents the utility average. The entire Hay Road facility, with more than 500 megawatts of generating capacity, has a total cost of $470 per kilowatt vs. $600 per kilowatt for a typical unit of this type.
"Unit No. 4 represents the finishing touch on the state-of-the-art technology now in place at the Hay Road Power Complex," said Frank Perry, vice president of production, Delmarva Power. "The Complex will help keep Delmarva Power's prices among the lowest in the region and meet our environmental responsibilities."
In keeping with the company's Serving & Conserving Delmarva environmental stewardship program, the Hay Road Power Complex offers the following benefits:
-- On a typical day, Unit No. 4's electrical output saves natural resources by eliminating the need for burning more than 1,200 tons of coal or 160,000 gallons of oil at other plants.
-- By dissipating heat at the cooling tower, Hay Road does not have to use more than 80 million gallons of river water each day.
-- Extensive control measures significantly reduce noise.
-- An overall 45 percent thermal efficiency rate helps reduce operating costs.
