DELMARVA POWER FILES APPLICATION TO BUILD PLANT IN DORCHESTER COUNTY
WILMINGTON, Del., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Delmarva Power (NYSE: DEW) today announced that an application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity is being filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission for a 300-megawatt coal-fired generating station to be located in Dorchester County, Md.
The proposed generating station, called Dorchester Unit I, is estimated to cost $600 million. The plant is proposed to be located approximately two miles northeast of Delmarva's existing Vienna Power Plant on a site not yet acquired by the company.
The proposed plant is part of the company's Challenge 2000 strategy for satisfying future energy demands of its customers using a balanced mix of resources. The strategy, called "Save Some, Buy Some, Build Some," combines energy saving customer demand-side programs, purchased electric power, and the utility's construction program.
"We are seeking approval from the commission at this time, so that Delmarva can maintain its option to have a power plant on line by the year 2000," said H. Ray Landon, executive vice president, Delmarva Power.
Landon said he expects the commission to issue a decision on the company's application within two years. "If we receive commission approval, Delmarva has the flexibility to accelerate or delay the construction of Dorchester Unit I to match expected growth in customers' demands for electricity," said Landon.
