DELL NAMES TOM CAROTHERS SERVICE AND SUPPORT VP FOR NORTH AMERICA

 AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced the appointment of Earl T. (Tom) Carothers to the new position of vice president, service and support for Dell's North American subsidiary. Carothers is a 27-year veteran of the high technology industry, having spent the last 23 years with Digital Equipment Corporation. He will report to Joel Kocher, president of sales, marketing and service for Dell.
 In making the announcement, Kocher stated, "Tom's rich background in customer service has prepared him extremely well for this critical end-user support position. His keen appreciation for customer needs, his proven ability to exceed customer expectations and his vision and leadership will help us further our reputation as an uncompromising provider of outstanding after-market service and support."
 Carothers served in a variety of management positions during his tenure with DEC, serving most recently as director of the company's software business group for Asia-Pacific and Americas. Prior to that he managed the company's software product services, was head of customer service for DEC's major corporate accounts and served in a number of sales, marketing and manufacturing positions. Prior to his association with DEC, Carothers served with Control Data Corporation and Howard Research Corporation.
 In his new position, Carothers will have full responsibility for Dell's customer support programs in North America. Those responsibilities include the design, development and marketing of those service programs in ways that clearly differentiate Dell from its competitors.
