DELL INTRODUCES NEW, LOW-PRICED DIMENSION PCs
 FOR PRICE-SENSITIVE CUSTOMERS
AUSTIN, Texas, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced Dimension by Dell, a new family of 10 floor-standing, desktop and notebook computers priced starting at just $1,259 complete with monitor, and designed for customers who demand high quality and reliability at very low prices.
Every Dimension PC is developed to Dell specifications and extensively tested prior to shipment to meet Dell's exacting standards for compatibility and reliability. Dimension PCs come with Dell's 30-day money back guarantee of customer satisfaction, as well as one year of Dell's highly acclaimed toll-free technical support and an on-site service warranty.
The Dimension family provides a full range of low-cost solutions including five desktop systems, three floor-standing servers and two notebook computers, available in a total of 23 popular models which vary by microprocessor, system memory and storage devices. All Dimension systems include a 386 or 486 microprocessor, an SVGA or UltraVGA color display, a system mouse, and MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre- installed.
Included in the Dimension family are the NL20 and NL25 notebook PCs, which were previously introduced. Better Overall Value
Dimension systems, in comparison to products such as two recently announced systems in the ProLinea line from Compaq, offer users more features -- such as a high-performance color monitor included in the purchase price, more expansion slots and greater memory expansion -- at prices lower than the suggested list prices (SLPs) of comparable ProLinea models. The lowest-priced Dimension, with a 25-MHz Intel386 SX microprocessor, two-megabytes (MB) of system memory, an 80MB hard disk drive, three drive bays, four expansion slots, two diskette drives, an SVGA color monitor, a system mouse, and MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre-installed, is priced at $1,259, compared with a Compaq ProLinea 3/25s Model 84 with an SLP of $1,693 comparably equipped. Compaq recently announced $999 pricing for another ProLinea system, the 3/25zs Model 84, which comes with 2MB of memory; an identically sized hard drive; one diskette drive; and two drive bays and expansion slots. The $999 SLP does not include a monitor, mouse or Windows, which typically would add more than four hundred dollars to the real cost of the system.
A higher-performance system in the Dimension line is a 486DX/33 desktop model with an Intel486 DX 33-MHz processor; 4MB of system memory, a 120MB hard disk drive, dual diskette drives, four drive bays, six expansion slots, an UltraVGA color monitor, and MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre-installed, priced at $2,099, compared with a $2,587 SLP for a comparably equipped ProLinea 4/33 Model 120 with only three drive bays and three expansion slots.
At the high end of the Dimension line is a 486DX2/50 floor-standing system with a 50-MHz Intel486 DX/2 microprocessor, 8MB of system memory, a 212MB hard disk drive, dual diskette drives, six drive bays and six expansion slots, an UltraVGA color monitor, a system mouse, and MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre-installed, priced at $2,799. Compaq's new ProLinea product line does not include floor-standing or server models.
"Dimension is the latest example of how Dell's customer-focused approach delivers the right mix of product, price, service and support for each market segment," said Joel Kocher, senior vice president of Dell USA. "We expect Dimension to be very attractive to customers who expect to pay a low price for their computing solutions, and who also demand full-featured products yet don't require advanced technology enhancements and extensive, customized technical support and service. Low prices are only a part of what they expect from a computer company."
Dimension systems can be customized with numerous factory-installed options, including video and memory upgrades, a fax modem and a tape backup unit.
Continuing with Dell's tradition of industry leadership in service and support, Dimension systems come with toll-free technical support and second-business-day on-site warranty service for one year. Customers can also purchase extended service and technical support beyond the first year. Dell's toll-free TechFax support and bulletin board services are also included with every Dimension system.
