DELL CUTS PRICES, EXPANDS SERVICES AND SUPPORT AND ADDS NEW LOW-COST LINE OF PCs; CAPITALIZES ON OPERATING EFFICIENCIES TO OFFER MORE VALUE
 AUSTIN, Texas, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move aimed at providing tailored solutions to all customer segments in the PC marketplace, Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today reduced prices on its Dell personal computers, undercutting the suggested list prices (SLPs) of Compaq's new DESKPRO/i systems by as much as 27 percent.
 Included in Dell's new lower prices are expanded service and support programs with the industry's first guarantees for compatibility, technical support and on-site service; and new service options. The company also announced a new line of PCs for U.S. customers, called Dimension by Dell, that is priced 17 percent to 34 percent below the SLPs for comparable configurations of Compaq's three new ProLinea systems.
 In making the announcement, Dell Chairman and CEO Michael S. Dell stated, "The enhanced Dell product line and new Dimension by Dell line expand our strategy to provide different solutions for customers with differing needs. We believe these needs are not based on price alone. Our customers make their purchase decisions on value, and that means the right combination of price, product performance, services, technical support, responsiveness and the ability to efficiently deliver."
 New services and guarantees for the Dell line are expected to appeal particularly to business users who want significant service and support features. Backed by financial commitments, the guarantees promise next- business-day hardware service response, guaranteed system compatibility with three years of free problem diagnosis and hardware updates; and guaranteed, prompt technical support.
 Enhancements to existing, free services for the Dell line include: extended hours for unlimited toll-free technical support; a 30-day, toll-free "Getting Started Helpline"; and expanded presence on CompuServe with a new Dell Users Forum for customer use. New customized service options, such as a 30-day Easy Start Network service; multi- vendor, on-site network support and maintenance; applications technical support; and an electronic data interchange (EDI) service have also been introduced. Dell customers already get a 30-day money-back customer- satisfaction guarantee, a one-year on-site service warranty and unlimited, round-the-clock TechFax technical support and bulletin board services.
 New Dimension Line
 Dell's new Dimension family of five desktop and three floor-standing systems and two notebook computers, is targeted at customers who are looking for low-priced computing solutions, but who also need high- quality, full-featured products backed by responsive service and support. System prices begin at $1,259 for a 386SX-based system configured with two-megabytes (MB) of system memory, an 80MB hard disk drive, two diskette drives, an SVGA color monitor, a system mouse, and MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre-installed. Dimension carries Dell's toll-free, automated technical support; one-year access to the Dimension expert help hotline; 24-hour-a-day TechFax services; one year of second-business-day on-site service; and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
