DELL COMPUTER OFFERS EXTENSIVE ARRAY OF SOFTWARE AND PERIPHERALS; NEW 'DELLWARE' LINE BACKED BY COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE AND SUPPORT PROGRAM
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DELL) today began selling a comprehensive selection of software and peripherals designed to support the growing number of corporations and individuals seeking a single, direct source for personal computers and PC-related products.
The new line, called DellWare, comprises more than 650 popular software packages and hardware peripherals from among the world's foremost high technology vendors. The products are offered through a partnership with Merisel, Inc., a leading distributor of software and peripheral products.
The introduction of DellWare is a logical step in Dell's move toward becoming a full-service provider of customized technology solutions, according to Rob Howe, vice president and general manager of Dell Direct Sales. The company already builds its computers made-to-order to customer requirements. The addition of the DellWare line now enables Dell customers to additionally select the software and peripherals of their choice.
"While there will always be some customers who want to shop for computer-related products in a store, there is a growing group of buyers who want the convenience of shopping for PCs and related products by phone," Mr. Howe said. "We'll continue to look for new and better ways to serve our expanding customer base with customized, rather than pre- packaged, solutions. Our ultimate goal is to consistently demonstrate to end-users that Dell provides the best value and convenience when purchasing technology products."
The DellWare collection of products is featured in a catalog to begin mailing this week to approximately 750,000 Dell customers and prospects throughout the United States. Customers can order DellWare products by calling a toll-free Dell number.
The introduction of DellWare follows months of intensive negotiations with a number of distribution companies and scores of software and peripheral manufacturers that will advertise their products in the catalog. The program has generated widespread interest in part because it offers these software and peripheral manufacturers visibility with Dell's installed customer base. It also provides Merisel the opportunity to expand its reach beyond its traditional retail and computer superstore distribution.
Merisel will manage the inventory of DellWare products, enabling Dell to focus on providing customers the cost savings and convenience of "one-stop shopping." In addition to saving the time and expense of buying from multiple vendors, customers will benefit from prices that are comparable to those at computer superstores, free pre-purchase information on advertised products and low-priced annual software support contracts.
Customers order DellWare products by calling a toll-free number answered by Dell. Once the order is verified and payment is arranged, the order is electronically transmitted to Merisel where the order is processed for shipping that day. Customers can have the products delivered the next business day for a $5.00 charge.
"In working with Dell over the last 90 days, we developed a keen appreciation and admiration of the service and support levels they provide to their customers," said Merisel vice president of retail and major accounts Elliot Levine. "Therefore, it was tremendously exciting to be selected as the distributor they felt would best uphold those same standards."
Mr. Levine added, "The linchpin to making this partnership successful was the ability of our companies to design technology which integrated our two computer systems. This enabled us to achieve maximum efficiencies and cost savings for order entry, tracking and delivery."
 Expanded Software Support Capabilities
Dell will extend its industry-leading service and support capability to DellWare through Software Support, Inc., a Florida-based organization that specializes in software training and support by telephone. Customers buying DellWare products can phone the Dell toll-free number to receive 24-hour software product support for more than 120 of the industry's leading software packages. Through this approach customers need only contact one source -- Dell -- for all sales transactions, service offerings and support for DellWare items.
Dell's competitive pricing, proven record for customer service and support and knowledgeable sales and support staff are expected to attract customers who currently buy PCs, software and peripherals from multiple vendors. DellWare also will appeal to companies that want to reduce the number of purchase orders they create for technology products.
"We've been told that it costs up to $100.00 for some of our major corporate accounts to generate a purchase order," explained Mr. Howe. "By buying from a single source, companies can save money right off the bat."
DellWare is available in the U.S. at this time. Plans are being made to expand the program internatio
