-- Also Introduces Availability of New Dell Dimension XPS Tower System
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its ongoing strategy to offer personal computers tailored to specific customer segments or "techno-types," Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced a new line of Dell Dimension systems, ideal for the "techno-boomer" -- the small- office/home-office user who is looking to make a PC purchase that insures good value for the money and upgradeability to advanced technology for the long term. Priced starting at $1,230 including a color monitor, the new Dell Dimension systems will be available beginning in early November in the U.S. with availability in Canada and Europe, as well.
"With today's announcement, these new systems complete the renovation of the Dell Dimension line, first begun with our award- winning Dell Dimension XPS line of products introduced two months ago," said Joel Kocher, Dell's president of worldwide sales, marketing and service. "These new systems enable the cost-smart, knowledgeable PC buyer to purchase a system that incorporates the latest technologies at an attractive price."
The new Dell Dimension line consists of five systems based on the full range of Intel(R) 486 processors -- from 25MHz SX to 66MHz DX2, with up to 64-megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM). The systems offer up to 1MB of video RAM, enabling the system to display rich, true- to-life color images; accelerated local-bus graphics enabling users to run graphics-intensive applications quickly; upgradeability to PentiumTM OverDriveTM technology allowing users access to future generations of power; and upgradeability to second level external cache of 128K or 256K, which increases overall system performance.
In addition, the new Dell Dimension systems offer customers the flexibility to upgrade to higher levels of performance through five ISA slots, two of which double as VL expansion slots. Options include tape back-up devices, fax/modems and double-spin CD- ROM drives that support multisession photo CD.
In addition, Dell introduced tower models of the Dell Dimension XPS line, which incorporates 6 external drive bays, for optimal flexibility when adding peripherals such as CD-ROM drives and tape back-up drives. With the same "screaming performance" as the XPS desktops, the new towers start with the fastest Intel 486 DX2 processors on the market, running at 50 or 66MHz, as well as a minimum of 8MB of RAM to handle "memory hungry" applications, and Pentium OverDrive upgradeability. With outstanding video performance, Dell Dimension XPS systems come standard with a no. 9 GXE VL video card and may be upgraded to a Diamond Viper VL video card. Options include factory-installed CD-ROM drives, sound card and amplified speakers. Prices for the tower model of the Dell Dimension XPS start at $2,149 with an UltraScan color monitor.
Today's Dell Dimension products debut on the heels of the successful August launch of the Dell Dimension XPS desktop line. In the short time since its introduction, the XPS line has garnered awards and praise from industry reviewers. For example, trade journal PC Computing named the Dell Dimension XPS "Best Multimedia System" in its October issue and nominated the system as a finalist for their prestigious "Most Valuable Product" award to be announced at Comdex/Fall '93 in Las Vegas.
All Dell Dimension systems are covered by Dell's award-winning service and support with a one year next-business-day, on-site service contract through BancTec Service Corporation; unlimited, toll-free 7-day-a-week, 24-hour-a-day telephone support with guaranteed five- minute response; a next-business day on-site service guarantee; a system compatibility guarantee; and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
