DELL COMPUTER INTRODUCES 386 SL NOTEBOOK COMPUTER FOR
 PRICE-SENSITIVE BUYERS
AUSTIN, Texas, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced the newest addition to its line of notebook computers, the Dell System NL25. Targeted at the more price- conscious consumer market, the Dell System NL25 starts at $1,999 and is based on an Intel386(TM) SL microprocessor running at 25-megahertz (MHz).
"Today's introduction is part of our continued strategy to provide a wide range of portable computer products and service/support options for an increasingly segmented marketplace," said Joel J. Kocher, Dell's senior vice president of U.S. sales and operations. "The NL25 appeals to the price-sensitive consumer who wants the features and value of a 386 SL notebook computer, yet would rather forego special features that add to the cost of the system."
 Dell Diversifies Notebook Product Line.
The Dell System NL25 joins Dell's NX20 in the company's value series of general-purpose notebook computers. The systems are supported by Dell's customer service program that includes toll-free technical support and rapid response, return-to-factory service. Dell's performance series -- the Dell Systems 320N, 320N+ and the 325NC -- incorporate enhanced technology features and a comprehensive range of services such as pre-loaded software and next-business-day, on-site system replacement.
According to Kocher, the growth and increasing user segmentation of the portable computer market encouraged Dell to further diversify its portable product line. "Our portable strategy has been to offer our customers quality products that provide speed, ergonomics and reliability across all price points," he added.
The Dell System NL5 -- A High Value Alternative.
Weighing in at 6.3 pounds, the Dell System NL25 measures 8.3-inches by 11-inches by 1.8-inches high. Scheduled to ship in April, the unit comes standard with 2 megabytes (MB) of system memory, expandable up to 8MB; 64 kilobytes of cache memory; a 60 or 80MB hard disk drive; and a 3.5-inch, 1.44 MB internal diskette drive. The 60MB hard drive model is priced at $1,999 and the 80MB configuration will sell for $2,199.
Powered by rechargeable NiCad batteries, the Dell System NL25 can operate on a single charge for a minimum of approximately 2.5 hours with no power management features enabled. Using the full power management capabilities of the SL chip, users can significantly extend the battery operating time by reducing the power consumption of the system when various subsystems (i.e. CPU, hard drive access) are not in use.
The Dell System NL25's monochrome VGA display is capable of supporting up to 32 grey scales and is based on high-definition, triple supertwist nematic technology for bright, clear images. With a diagonal dimension of 9.5-inches, the screen provides ample viewing area and offers brightness and contrast controls that allow users to adjust the screen to their working conditions.
The system's full-function, 85-key integrated keyboard features an embedded numeric keypad, screen navigation and separate cursor control keys in an inverted "T" layout. The keys have extended 3mm travel to give the unit the feel of a desktop keyboard.
The system can accommodate a 2400/9600 baud data/fax modem and includes a math co-processor socket, one serial and one parallel port, a VGA port, and one port that accommodates a mouse, external keyboard or numeric keypad.
