DELL CLARIFIES STATUS OF SEC'S INFORMAL INQUIRY

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- To clarify certain media reports, Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DELL) today reiterated that the Enforcement Division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has not completed its informal inquiry into the company's accounting practices and public disclosures related to foreign currency hedging and trading transactions. Some media reports stemming from telephone conference calls conducted by the company Monday had indicated that the inquiry was complete, and that restatement of earnings for prior periods would not be required.
Tom Meredith, chief financial officer for the company, reconfirmed that Dell cannot make any predictions about the eventual outcome of the Enforcement Division's informal inquiry.
Meredith added, "The SEC Division of Corporation Finance has substantially completed its comments on our offering documents. With the supplemental disclosures concerning foreign currency transactions contained in the amended Registration Statement filed Monday, and the later inclusion of year-end financial information, we expect to complete the offering in late February or early March.
