AUSTIN, Texas, June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL) today announced that it has broken the $2,000 price barrier for a fully configured Pentium(TM)-based desktop system, providing Pentium power at i486 prices. Ideally suited for home users and mainstream users in small- to medium-sized businesses, the award- winning Dell Dimension(TM) XPS desktop system with a 60-megahertz (MHz) Pentium processor, 340-megabyte (MB) hard drive, 8MB of memory, a 15-inch monitor, DOS 6.22, MS(R) Windows(TM) 3.1 and a mouse is now available for just $1,999. The company also announced a new mini tower configuration with a 90MHz Pentium processor, 540MB hard drive, 8MB of memory, a 15-inch monitor, double-speed CD-ROM drive, DOS 6.22, MS Windows 3.1 and a mouse for just $2,599. These new systems are available immediately and are backed by Dell's acclaimed service and support.
"We are lowering the barrier of entry into Pentium-processor computing and providing advanced processing power to business and home users with mainstream computing needs," said Tom Martin, Dell's vice president of worldwide marketing. "We've said we are serious about Pentium leadership and $1,999 proves it. Dell has worked aggressively to establish its leadership position in the Pentium-based marketplace by being quick to market with the right products, at the right price and the results are beginning to show. In fact, nearly half of all Dell Dimension systems currently sold in the U.S. are configured with a Pentium processor."
Mr. Martin added that with these "everyday-low prices," the Pentium processor has now become a relevant choice for users considering 486-based systems, indicating a real shift in the market for Pentium from the performance-oriented user to the user requiring a mid-range workstation or a powerful network node. Where as only three months ago customers could purchase a 66MHz IntelDX2(TM)-based computer for $2,000, they can now purchase a fully configured Pentium-based system for the same price.
The Dell Dimension XPS P60 and Dell Dimension XPS P90 systems have a variety of high-performance features such as a PCI (peripheral component interconnect) local bus; 64-bit, local-bus graphics; an optional triple-speed NEC CD-ROM drive for extremely fast data access; and second- level write-back cache for a powerful boost in overall system performance. Customers can also choose as an option the new No. 9 GXE64 graphics accelerator video board, providing 64-bit graphics and advanced "hawkeye" features, which allow users to zoom and pan within a choice of virtual screen sizes. With the No.9 GXE64 PRO, the system can display more than 16 million colors and provides some of the fastest graphics available in the PC market today. In addition, the Dell Dimension XPS P90 includes Enhanced IDE, which enables multiple high-performance peripherals to be installed in the system. These advanced features are an ideal match for customers looking for the latest technologies in an affordable, well-designed package.
The Dell Dimension XPS P60 is available in a mid-sized desktop model and the Dell Dimension XPS P90 is available in a mid-sized desktop model as well as the recently announced mini tower. The Dell Dimension XPS mini- tower unit is a sleek, expandable, high-performance system -- offering a new deskside form-factor -- which allows for added desk space and system expandability, while providing an ergonomically designed chassis with easy- to-access drive bays when using peripherals such as CD-ROM drives.
