DELL ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ENERGY EFFICIENT SYSTEMS

 AUSTIN, Texas, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In support of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program, Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) today announced a series of energy efficient personal computers that comply with the federal government's
Energy Star requirements. Appearing with the Energy Star logo, these systems will be available for shipment on June 23, 1993.
 As outlined in President Clinton's Earth Day address, the federal government -- the largest buyer of computers in the world -- is committed to purchasing computers, monitors and printers that meet the EPA's Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency whenever possible. The federal government projects this action could save the government $40 million per year in reduced electricity costs from computer equipment while helping to reduce air pollution caused by power generation.
 "We realize that producing ecologically sensible products is a good thing for the environment and our customers," said Rob Howe, Dell's acting senior vice president of Dell USA. "However, it is clear that customers do not want to spend significant additional dollars to obtain this class of machine. Dell will continue to evaluate future technologies and incorporate them at reasonable price points as our customers ask for them."
 "We have a significant presence in the government computer market and we commend the federal government for taking the lead to procure energy-saving technologies," said AnnMarie Randle, Dell's vice president of government, education and medical sales. "This action exemplifies the rewards that consumers can expect from a strong government-industry partnership."
 In concert with Energy Star guidelines, each Energy Star Dell system consumes less than 30 watts of electricity while the system is idle -- a feature that the EPA expects will cut computer energy use by 50-75 percent. By incorporating energy efficiency into the computer's design, this feature does not compromise or add costs to the system price.
 The following are examples of Energy Star models and price points for systems configured with MS-DOS, Windows and a mouse:
 -- a 425s/L with combo floppy, 120-megabyte (MB) hard drive, 4MB of memory is priced at $1,270;
 -- a 433s/L with 3.5-inch floppy, 170MB hard drive, 4MB of memory is priced at $1,450;
 -- a 433/L with 3.5-inch floppy, 170MB hard drive, 4MB of memory is priced at $1,650;
 -- a 450/L with 3.5-inch floppy, 170MB hard drive, 4MB of memory is priced at $1,850;
 -- and a 466/L with 3.5-inch floppy, 170MB hard drive, 4MB of memory is priced at $2,150.
 Each system comes with Dell's award-winning, comprehensive service and support program for its performance series systems, which includes unlimited lifetime toll-free technical support with guaranteed response and guaranteed next-business day, on-site service through Dell's alliance with BancTec Service Corporation.
