DELCO REMY TO MANUFACTURE NEW GENERATOR IN INDIANA
ANDERSON, Ind., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Delco Remy Division of

General Motors, a worldwide leader in supplying electrical power products for mobile applications, announced today that it will manufacture a newly designed light-duty generator in Anderson.
The initial module to produce the CS130D Delcotron generator, a $36.4 million project, will be installed in Plant 11 beginning early next year, according to General Manager Robert D. Wight and UAW Local 662 Shop Chairman Wayne Simpson.
In addition to significant new quality, reliability and durability design enhancements, the CS130D generator features dual internal fans for quieter operation and fewer parts for final assembly.
"We are listening to the voice of our customers," Wight said. "Our future growth is linked to our ability to be flexible and respond to their
requirements which improves their competitiveness. We are obviously pleased that we are meeting that challenge."
Plant 11 was chosen for the initial production of the generator because of its existing resources, including available floor space, skilled personnel and its proximity to engineering support in Anderson.
"We have the greatest work force in the world right here in Anderson, Ind.," Simpson said. "The skill and craftsmanship of our people is second to none."
Both Wight and Simpson emphasized that the product's success depends on meeting moving targets for continuous improvement in quality, cost and delivery.
Significant plant rearrangement and equipment procurement will be required to build the new generator in the 40-year-old facility. Synchronous manufacturing methods will be utilized in the plant operations to reduce waste and to maintain quality and competitive costs.
Initially, the CS130D generator will provide the electrical power needs for GM's 1994 model year small and mid-sized cars and trucks. Plans are to phase the unit into the majority of GM passenger cars and light-duty trucks by the end of the decade.
Plant 11 manufactured its first Delcotron generator in 1962. The CS130D marks the sixth-generation Delcotron generator to be produced in the plant. The 534,000-square-foot facility most recently was rearranged and automated in 1985-86 to produce the CS130 series generator currently built there.
The latest Delco Remy new-product development follows announcements late last year that the division will build a new passenger car starter motor and the GM electric car propulsion motor in Anderson. In addition, the battery for the GM electric vehicle will be built at the Delco Remy battery plant in Muncie.
Delco Remy is a division of the GM Automotive Components Group and employs nearly 15,500 people worldwide. Approximately 7,000 are employed in Anderson, with about 900 working in Plant 11.
