DEL WEBB REPORTS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN HOME SALES AND CLOSINGS
PHOENIX, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Del Webb Corp. (NYSE: WBB) today reported a 57 percent increase in new sales orders and a 41 percent increase in home closings for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1992, compared to last year's corresponding quarter.
In addition, the company said that its backlog of homes under contract had reached a record level of 1,559 homes with a contract amount of $243 million.
Chairman Philip J. Dion said the increase in sales orders was primarily attributable to Sun City Palm Springs, which began accepting sales orders in July. Sun City Palm Springs recorded 257 new sales orders during the quarter, most of which resulted from the conversion of lot reservations. "Our newest Sun City is off to a good start and we're quite encouraged by the performances at our other three Sun City communities, where orders are up an aggregate of 10 percent," Dion said.
Company-wide, Webb recorded 776 new sales orders during the quarter, compared to 496 during the same period one year ago.
Sales at Coventry Homes, Webb's conventional home building operation, decreased 17 percent, mainly as a result of fewer operating subdivisions. Dion said that Coventry's results should improve as new subdivisions are brought into production later this fiscal year.
Total home closings at the company increased to 480 during the quarter compared to 340 during the same period one year ago. Closings at the active adult communities increased by 13 percent to 362 homes, while Coventry, which had just begun operations a year ago, increased substantially, from 22 to 118.
Sun City Palm Springs did not have closings in the quarter. "Our first home closings at Sun City Palm Springs occurred Oct. 1, and we expect these closings to increase our revenues during the next quarter," Dion said.
Dion added that the increase in the company's backlog of homes (1,559 vs. 1,188) and the record contract amount of $243 million was anticipated with the opening of Sun City Palm Springs.
The company will release its first quarter revenue and earnings statement in late October.
Del Webb Corp. is the nation's leading developer of active adult communities with projects in the Phoenix, Tucson, Ariz., Las Vegas, and Palm Springs, Calif., metropolitan areas.
