DEL MONTE FOODS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO BUILD
 DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN BIRMINGHAM
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Del Monte Foods announced today that it will build a new distribution center in Birmingham, Ala. Warehouse operations currently located in Memphis, Tenn. and Atlanta will be consolidated into the new facility, which will serve the southeastern region of the United States, with the exception of Florida.
Dee Ann Campbell, Del Monte Foods vice president of corporate communications, said the new facility would enhance both efficiency and effectiveness of the company's current distribution process. "Birmingham is centrally located within an important and growing section of the United States -- the southeastern region," Campbell stated. "The business climate and the opportunities in the area appear to be ideal for our needs."
The new Birmingham distribution center will be located adjacent to the Valley East Industrial Park in the Pinson Valley section of the city. Construction of the new facility will begin in early 1992. Del Monte plans to occupy the building by October 1992 and begin operations in November 1992. The property is being purchased from CSX Transportation and will include more than 275,000 square feet of warehouse space, with packaging lines scheduled to be added after the first year of operation. The warehouse will carry the full line of Del Monte Foods products and will be the fourth largest distribution center in the Del Monte system.
The Del Monte Foods distribution center relocation to Birmingham is being coordinated locally by Mike Graham, Graham & Co., The Metropolitan Development Board, Alabama Power Co., and CSX Transportation. In addition, city and state representatives were actively involved in Del Monte's evaluation process, which assessed many alternative distribution center locations throughout the southeastern United States.
Del Monte Foods is a privately held, San Francisco-based company, manufacturing and marketing food and beverage products under the Del Monte brand name. Sales were $1.4 billion in FY 1991, the first full fiscal year following the company's LBO from RJRNabisco.
