 DEL MONTE FOODS ANNOUNCES CONVERSION TO BROKER SALES REPRESENTATION
 SAN FRANCISCO, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Del Monte Foods announced today that it will convert its direct retail sales force to a broker system effective June 1992.
 Michael J. Stieger, senior vice president of sales at the company, stated that, "This is an aggressive and proactive move for Del Monte Foods. We clearly see this as an opportunity to meet the challenges of a changing marketplace and ultimately better serve our customers."
 Del Monte Foods has had split representation through a combination of direct sales and brokers for many years. This conversion will mean that responsibility for Del Monte products sold to grocery stores and other retail venues will be consolidated with premier local brokers throughout the United States. The selection process for new broker assignments is expected to be completed by mid-May.
 As an established food processor and marketer, Del Monte Foods continues to respond to the ever-changing structure of the retail food business. "We have a proud tradition in direct sales, but industry trends and the need to provide a higher level of service and improved efficiency make this a necessary change for Del Monte," according to Stieger. "This is an opportunity to take a premier product and sell it through the best local brokers available to improve service to our customers."
 Del Monte Foods is an independent, privately held San Francisco- based company, manufacturing and marketing food and beverage products under the Del Monte brand name. Sales for the 1991 fiscal year were $1.4 billion.
