DEKALB GENETICS RELEASES NEW SEED PRODUCTS TO FARMERS; MOST EXTENSIVE PRODUCT INTRODUCTION IN RECENT YEARS

DEKALB, Ill., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- DEKALB Genetics Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: SEEDB) said today that it is releasing 25 new corn, soybean and sorghum products for sale to farmers, calling it the company's most extensive product introduction in recent years. The new products include 13 new corn hybrids, the product line that accounts for most of DEKALB's seed sales and the largest portion of its $34 million seed research budget.
In 1992, DEKALB released a total of 13 new products, including eight corn hybrids. Over the past several years, the company has significantly increased the number of product offerings in every maturity zone. As a result, new products continue to make up a growing percentage of sales.
"We estimate that corn hybrids introduced in the past four years will account for more than 70 percent of our 1993 U.S. corn sales," said Bruce P. Bickner, chairman and chief executive officer. "This reflects the increasing productivity of our research effort as well as the growing strength of our product line."
The new hybrids and varieties released this year are targeted for specific areas where their performance features can provide substantial economic benefits to farmers.
The 13 corn hybrids cover nearly all maturity zones, offering improved performance under a variety of farm management practices. According to extensive company tests, the hybrids offer more return per acre, and many feature improved defensive characteristics. Among the new releases are products with more yield, suitability for reduced tillage, improved standability, faster grain drydown at harvest, drought tolerance and tolerance to such pests as the European corn borer and southern virus complex.
In 1992, DEKALB's 16 most important corn hybrids provided a 6.2 bushel per acre advantage over all competitors in nearly 1,000 Field Analysis Comparison Trial (FACT) head-to-head comparisons. The company expects that the new releases will add to that advantage in future comparisons.
"DEKALB's continued investment in research has provided hybrids with significantly improved value for our customers," Bickner said.
The eight new soybean varieties offer yield improvements in each maturity zone. Two of the early maturity varieties offer resistance to soybean cyst nematode, a pest that continues to spread and reduce soybean yields for farmers. Several others carry resistance to Phytophthora root rot, prevalent in soils that retain moisture. The new soybean varieties also possess features that fit the current trend toward no-till, drill farming.
Among the four sorghum hybrid advancements are three medium- to late-maturing grain sorghums and a new sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. DEKALB, he leader in the hybrid sorghum market, has seen sorghum yields more than triple since 1956 when the company introduced the industry's first sorghum hybrid.
"We are pleased that our research program has contributed to this advancement with innovative plant features and yield improvements," Bickner said.
Based in DeKalb, Ill., DEKALB Genetics Corporation is engaged in the research, production and marketing of agricultural seed, hybrid swine and egg-laying breeding stock. DEKALB Genetics Corporation Class B Common Stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System, under the symbol SEEDB.
