What do you get if you report corrupt cops on the London force?

A large wrap over the knuckles, your friends turning against you and an unwanted transfer to Newcastle to work the night shift.

But if Sergeant Nicky Cole thought he had it bad in 'The Smoke' after being labelled a whistle blower then the racism he is about to encounter up north among his colleagues as a black copper looks set to be even worse.

This new police series from the BBC stars Don Gilet, pictured, and foxy Dervla Kirwan as lawyer love interest Claire Maxwell, and promises to be gritty viewing from the start.

Tonight the body of a young woman is pulled from the Tyne after an apparently successful suicide bid.

But on closer inspection there may be more to the grisly discovery than meets the eye, as the deceased was the key witness in an extortion trial - and the only other witness has gone missing.

Next week, Nicky has to go naked undercover as a punter, to try to infiltrate a prostitution racket.

Other shady characters to look out for in the series include straight-talking fellow Sergeant Rick Astel, who gets off on the wrong foot with Cole but will no doubt end up as his ally and new best mate.

Detective Sergeant Frank Maguire who doesn't take kindly to having a 'grass' in his midst, and 'the boss' - Detective Inspector Carter.

55 Degrees North is certainly different from the role in Babyfather which shot Don Gilet to fame.

He said: 'I was quite immature with Babyfather.

'It caught everyone's eye and I thought, 'Wow! I bet I get loads of offers now' - and I didn't.

'That was my last moment of thinking things fell on your plate. I won't make that mistake again.'
