DEFRA Releases New Report on PM Levels.

The U.K. Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) recently announced that the Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG), a non-departmental public body established in 2001 to provide scientific advice on air quality, has released a new report on particulate matter (PM) levels.

According to DEFRA, the report, titled "Particulate Matter in the United Kingdom," reveals that while PM levels "have been decreasing over the past few decades," background levels are "still very high and more work needs to be done to ensure that national targets for reducing particulate matter are met."

"The report is based on a substantial amount of data analysis and modeling work, conducted by members of the Air Quality Expert Group," said AQEG vice chairman Roy Harrison.

In the report, the group recommends that both primary emissions of PM and emissions of precursors to secondary PM be addressed.

"AQEG are concerned that much of local air quality management of particulate matter is currently driven by exceedences of one air quality objective, which tend to focus on 'hotspots'," notes the group in its report. "Consideration should be given to additional forms of regulation to reduce average population exposure, complementing the existing concentration-based limit values."
