DECEMBER HOLIDAYS BEGIN IN JULY AT HOLLAND AMERICA LINE
SEATTLE, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine planning a holiday party with 3,500 pounds of turkey, 1,800 bottles of champagne and 100 cases of plum pudding.
For Holland America Line, turkey, champagne and pudding are only the beginnings of what makes its holiday cruises so special.
For 1992, Holland America Line offers six special Christmas and New Year's cruises ranging in length from seven to 19 days. These cruises are extremely popular, and travelers are advised to book early to assure their choice of staterooms.
Christmas and New Year's cruises feature some of the most elaborate floral arrangements and decorations in the cruise industry, along with special activities and holiday cuisine.
"Holland America Line goes all out to use fresh trees, garland, wreaths and floral arrangements for decorating their holiday cruises," said Lynn Hoffman, president of Boat Blossoms in Hollywood, Fla. Hoffman has taken care of Holland America Line's year-round floral needs for eight years.
Hoffman said that planning for the Christmas season begins now with the ordering of evergreen boughs, trees, holly and poinsettias.
"In July I start waking up at night thinking about Christmas," he added.
Holland America Line again will offer the opportunity for passengers to purchase live Norfolk Island Pines, fully decorated, for their staterooms. Offered for the first time in 1991, over 300 were ordered and were "well received," said Mark Barnard, manager, Beverage Operations. Order forms are inserted in travel documents delivered several weeks prior to departure.
Combine the holidays and cruising and the traveler is sure to experience wonderful culinary treats. For the four ships, Hans Brinkhoff, director of Purchasing, orders 1,500 pounds of venison, 1,200 pieces of boneless quail, 1,000 partridges, 1,000 pounds of pheasant, 1,500 pounds of goose plus special orders of swordfish, tuna, shark and marlin.
"And don't forget the 500 gallons of eggnog," added Brinkhoff.
As a special attraction, during each holiday cruise the ship's culinary staff shows off their talents with a gala buffet, including spectacular ice carvings.
The crew prepares for the festivities by rehearsing in early December for a program of carols on Christmas Eve. Crew members from every department join in singing Christmas carols from their native countries, as well as English carols so passengers can sing along.
Also on Christmas Eve, Santa Claus arrives by tender if the ship is docked or may be lowered in one of the life boats if the ship is sailing. Brinkhoff said that approximately 500 gifts are bought for the children aged 18 years or younger and "the cruise staff wraps every one of them."
All passengers on Christmas Eve receive a special box of chocolates decorated with the Holland America Line logo and a Christmas card signed by the captain and hotel manager.
And in the true spirit of the holidays, the clergy on board will be conducting Catholic, Protestant and Jewish holiday services for both passengers and crew.
Holland America Line's classic flagship, the 1,075-passenger ss Rotterdam, offers a 19-day holiday cruise departing Dec. 16 from Norfolk, Va.
