DEALER ORDERS FOR NEW GEO PRIZM NEAR 45,000
WARREN, Mich., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- With the 1993 model year not

yet a month old, Chevrolet/Geo dealers already have ordered more than half the year's production of the new Geo Prizm, Chevrolet General Manager Jim C. Perkins announced.
"Orders for the Prizm, cars in dealer stock, and cars in transit now total nearly 45,000," Perkins said. "That compares with total production for the model year at the NUMMI plant in California of about 72,000."
The new Prizm is intended to be sold almost entirely at retail, whereas earlier models had heavy sales to daily rental fleets.
"We knew the Prizm was a winner when we first showed to our dealers, but this response is awesome," Perkins said. He said orders had escalated since Chevrolet announced the prices on the car -- $9,995 on the base unit and $10,630 for the uplevel LSI model.
"Early customer reaction also has been outstanding," Perkins said. "That, plus the car's low price and high value, have led our dealers to place big-time orders for the Prizm."
The new Prizm moves from subcompact to compact size for 1993, with seven cubic feet more interior room and more front and rear head, leg and shoulder room. It has a standard driver's side air bag, and available anti-lock brakes.
The Prizm shares none of its stylish new sheetmetal with its cousin, the Toyota Corolla, and is considerably quieter than last year's model. It has more horsepower, a longer wheelbase, retuned suspension for better ride and handling, and larger 14-inch tires.
