 DEA AND U.S. ATTORNEY MAKE DRUG ARRESTS
 BOSTON, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Nine men were arrested by federal,


state and local law enforcement authorities for interstate cocaine and marijuana trafficking over the weekend in Maine and Massachusetts, according to Wayne A. Budd, United States Attorney for Massachusetts, Carlo A. Boocia, Special Agent in Charge for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Boston and Thomas A. Hughes, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Boston.
 The arrests followed a year-long investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, in Maine and Massachusetts, the Maine Bureau of Intergovernmental Drug Enforcement (BIDE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United States Customs Service (USCS), the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CID), and the Cambridge Police Department (CPD). The investigation stemmed from information developed and shared by BIDE, following an investigation into marijuana trafficking in central and southern Maine.
 Law enforcement officials negotiated with the group for 20-25 kilograms of pure cocaine.
 On Feb. 15, 1992 at approximately 11:30 a.m., Robert Amato, age 42, of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., was arrested at a shopping plaza on Route 1, Kittery, Maine, following the transportation of approximately 20 kilograms of cocaine to the Kittery location. Shortly thereafter, Michael Mecurio, age 45, of 30 Squanto Lane, Woburn, Mass., was arrested at his home.
 On Feb. 16, 1992, 45 law enforcement agents executed arrest warrants issued on complaints by U.S. District Court. Between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., seven individuals were arrested.

 Revere, Mass.
 Anthony M. Zizza, age 47
 247 Proctor Ave.
 Revere, Mass.
 Louis J. DiPietro, age 44
 100 Marina Drive, Apt. 408
 Quincy, Mass.
 Anthony J. Damore, age 39
 595 Revere Beach Parkway, Apt. 56
 Revere, Mass.
 All defendants were held overnight at correctional facilities in Massachusetts and Maine. Amato is scheduled tomorrow for a removal hearing in U.S. District Court, Portland, Maine. All but Mecurio made their initial appearance in United States District Court in Boston before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert B. Collings. Mecurio is scheduled for an initial appearance tomorrow in U.S. District Court, Boston. They are charged with conspiracy to violate the federal Controlled Substances Act. The defendants will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William F. Sinnott of Budds' Narcotic Division in Boston and Jonathan Chiel of Budds' Public Corruption Unit.
 DEA, FBI, BIDE, USCS, IRS-CID and the CPD were assisted by the Greater Merrimack Valley Task Force and the Rowley Police Department.
