CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to a national need for engineering and nuclear expertise, Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S) has joined forces with six high-technology companies to compete for the management and operation of one of the country's largest and most complex national laboratories, the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) in southeastern Idaho.
DE&S is a member of the Lockheed Idaho Technologies team, led by Lockheed Corporation (NYSE: LK), that will submit a proposal to consolidate five primary contracts currently in effect at the Department of Energy's (DOE) INEL into a single management and operations (M&O) contract. Proposals for the five-year, $5 billion contract are due Nov. 1, 1993, with contract award scheduled for June 1994. Other Lockheed Idaho Technologies partners include Rust International, Inc. (NYSE: RST), Babcock & Wilcox, Parsons Environmental Services, Thermo Electron (NYSE: TMO), and Coleman Energy & Environmental Systems.
"We are pleased whenever our company's experience and capabilities so expressly match the needs of national interests," said Wayne Henry, senior vice president of DE&S' environmental programs. "In collaboration with world-class partners, we believe DE&S can play a role in meeting the important challenge of INEL's transition to a new energy and environmental mission. The team combines proven experience in nuclear operations and environmental remediation with technology development, systems integration and project management."
The 890 square-mile INEL site is the first of the DOE's national laboratories to make the cultural shift from defense work to innovations in nuclear technologies, non-nuclear energy endeavors and environmental enhancement. "We look forward to applying our abilities and experience to INEL's revolutionary new mission," Henry said. "Our team is made up of pacesetting, innovative companies that are well prepared to meet the rigorous standards and mandate of the INEL M&O contract."
A wholly owned affiliate of Duke Power Company (NYSE: DUK), DE&S brings to the Lockheed Idaho Technologies team a strong track record of cost effective management in the disciplined, regulated commercial nuclear power environment. Since 1982, DE&S has served more than 260 public and private sector clients on 950 projects. The company is applying its project management and nuclear management acumen to a number of large, complex projects, including the DOE's Civilian Radioactive Waste Management program, steam generator replacement for civilian nuclear reactors and the Louisiana Energy Services uranium enrichment project.
