BOSTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Communications Associates, Inc. (DCA) (NYSE: DCA) today announced new software communications products -- IRMA WorkStation for Microsoft Windows NT and IRMA WorkStation for OS/2 -- both of which link personal computers to mainframe computers.
"With the announcement of these two products, DCA continues its commitment to provide corporate computing departments with a wide range of workstation networking products that provide a consistent methodology to access data stored on mainframes," said Gerald W. Buran, DCA's vice president of sales and marketing. "IRMA WorkStation for Windows NT and IRMA WorkStation for OS/2 will give our customers' increased flexibilityRMA Work Station for Microsoft Windows NT has a number of productivity enhancement features including "QuickScripts" -- which allows users to automate a series of keystrokes and commands into a "script," and "QuickHits" -- which allows users to "point and click" on function keys displayed on the computer's screen to send commands to a mainframe computer.
IRMA WorkStation for OS/2 has a screen format and methodology or "interface" that is similar to DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows, which should ease the support and training burden for corporations that require PC-to-mainframe communications in both environments.
 NEW DIRECTION FOR DCA/MICROSOFT RELATIONSHIP
DCA and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced a change in their long- standing product development relationship that, among other things, calls for DCA to be the first distributor of Microsoft's SNA server product for its Windows NT platform.
In 1989, DCA and Microsoft joined together to develop the DCA/Microsoft Select Communications server (Comm Server), a client/server based product designed initially to operate with Microsoft's LAN Manager network operating system.
DCA will continue to focus on developing future versions of the Comm Server line for the OS/2 version 2.0 environment. Microsoft will continue to focus on developing its SNA server product for the Windows NT platform.
DCA is the first company that will offer the Microsoft SNA server product for Windows NT. Both the Comm Server and Windows NT products reflect a long-standing commitment by DCA and Microsoft to provide practical solutions for delivering host-based information to corporate desktops. DCA will provide the Macintosh client interface for both the Comm Server OS/2 2.0 product and the Microsoft SNA server product for Windows NT.
"We are pleased that our long-time SNA partner, DCA, has agreed to become the first to offer our SNA server product for Microsoft Windows NT," said Dwayne Walker, director, Microsoft Windows NT and networking products. "We look forward to our continued alliance with DCA to enhance and build great enterprise connectivity solutions for our customers."
"With Microsoft, we have enjoyed one of the longest and most successful development relationships in the industry," said Buran. "We will continue to build on this base and bring the power of cooperation to both the OS/2 and Windows NT arenas. DCA will be the first host access company with MS-DOS, OS/2, Macintosh, Windows and Windows NT- based clients that support both OS/2 and Windows NT-based servers."
DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Microsoft Windows NT is expected to be available 90 days after the shipment of Microsoft Windows NT. Pricing will be announced at the time of shipment.
IRMA WorkStation for OS/2 will be available in late spring for a suggested retail price of $495. Pricing outside of North America is subject to local market conditions.
Based 30 miles north of Atlanta in Alpharetta, Ga., with offices worldwide, DCA designs, manufactures, markets and supports PC networking products that enhance the productivity of PC users. Its IRMA communications products are the de facto standard for PC to mainframe communications.
