DCA ANNOUNCES NEW PLATFORM STRATEGY

 DCA ANNOUNCES NEW PLATFORM STRATEGY
BOSTON, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Communications Associates

Inc. (NYSE: DCA) today announced a new open platform strategy that provides users with what is believed to be the most comprehensive micro- to-mainframe communications solution offering for Windows, DOS and Macintosh including new support for TN3270 and Novell's NetWare for SAA.
"In response to growing customer needs, DCA is pleased to provide users with new communications connectivity options for industry standard TN3270 over TCP/IP and NetWare for SAA," said Gerald W. Buran, DCA's vice president of sales and marketing. "These products greatly enhance our strategy to offer users a suite of easy-to-use, cross-platform connectivity tools."
"Novell applauds DCA's industry-leading strategy to open its highly-successful, micro-to-mainframe products to new communications platforms such as NetWare for SAA," said Gerry Machi, Novell's vice president and general manager of the NetWare Systems Group, Sunnyvale (Calif.).
DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows, IRMA WorkStation for DOS and IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh now provide micro-to-mainframe communications through a breadth of connectivity options including support for non-DCA gateway products such as NetWare for SAA.
For example, users in a corporate marketing department that standardized on Novell NetWare for file server and printer sharing capabilities could now use IRMA WorkStation for Windows as a client to NetWare for SAA while other users in the sales department could use IRMA WorkStation for Windows to connect to an IBM 3174 through a distributed functional terminal (DFT) connection -- giving both departments a consistent interface for mainframe access.
In addition to NetWare for SAA support, TN3270 users can communicate to an IBM mainframe over a TCP/IP internet. For example, a management information services (MIS) director in a large telecommunications company with a TCP/IP internet could connect to an IBM 3172 and emulate an IBM terminal through TN3270 to access mainframe applications such as PROFS.
DCA's WorkStation products include features such as "QuickPads" -- a user configurable pad of frequently used keys, macros and scripts as well as "QuickHits" -- the ability to use the mouse for point-and-click PF key activation from PF options displayed on the screen. In addition, DCA's family of products include "QuickScripts" -- a feature that allows users to automate a series of keystrokes, commands and logical branches such as "if then" into a script which can be executed from a "QuickPad" when needed.
Other DCA connectivity options available include control unit terminal (CUT), distributed function terminal (DFT), 802.2 Token-Ring and synchronous data link control (SDLC). In addition, DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows can be a client to IRMALAN/EP, DCA's extended platform 3270 gateway.
Available through DCA's standard worldwide distribution network, NetWare for SAA support is planned to be included in DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows, IRMA WorkStation for DOS and IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh near the end of 1992. TN3270 support is planned to be included in DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows and IRMA WorkStation for DOS near the end of 1992.
IRMA WorkStation for Windows has a suggested retail price of $495 ($595 Canadian). IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh and IRMA WorkStation for DOS have a suggested retail price of $425. Users who purchase one of these DCA WorkStation products after August 18, 1992, who desire these new connectivity options can upgrade free of charge for 60 days following the first customer shipment of these connectivity enhancements.
Located 30 miles north of Atlanta with offices worldwide, DCA designs, manufactures, markets and supports PC networking products that enhance the productivity of PC users.
