DCA ANNOUNCES NETWARE FOR SAA CLIENT; JOINS NOVELL ON 20-CITY MARKETING TOUR

SAN FRANCISCO, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Communications Associates Inc. (DCA) (NYSE: DCA) today announced IRMA NetWare WorkStation for Windows (INWW) -- a workstation client for host access services that has been optimized to support Novell's NetWare for SAA local area network (LAN)-to-host platform -- introduced several new marketing programs for the NetWare for SAA environment and joined Novell Inc. to launch a 20-city marketing tour here to brief resellers and end users on the new partnership between both companies.
In February, DCA announced a new marketing and development partnership with Novell Inc. that included DCA's marketing Novell's NetWare for SAA to its customers. Under that agreemento?ffer -- at no extra charge -- up to five copies of INWW with each NetWare for SAA server it sells until Dec. 31, 1993.
In addition, for current NetWare for SAA customers requiring Windows host access connectivity, DCA is offering a "60-day money back guaranteed test drive" program for INWW until Dec. 31, 1993. Under this program, customers may purchase INWW from DCA for up to a 50 percent discount of suggested retail price. Limited quantities per customer are available.
"In working with partners to establish NetWare for SAA as the NetWare-to-host integration platform, Novell has given end users the freedom to evaluate and select products which meet their unique requirements built on NetWare," said Gerald W. Buran, DCA's vice president of sales and marketing. "We are pleased to be able to play a key role in this Novell-lead effort to bring true open and interoperable solutions to the NetWare for SAA environment."
"With the most powerful set of application program interfaces (APIs) available, DCA has developed the broadest line of cross-platform, heterogeneous communications products for host access services in the industry," said Gerry Machi, vice president and general manager of Novell's NetWare Systems Group-Sunnyvale. "As one of our most valuable partners, DCA is playing an important role in our combined efforts to provide NetWare for SAA customers with a variety of connectivity alternatives to meet their needs."
INWW is specifically designed for the NetWare for SAA platform incorporating customized installation and configuration support that will enable users to easily connect to their NetWare for SAA. DCA said it also intends to provide DOS and Macintosh clients that have been specifically designed for the NetWare for SAA in the near future.
INWW has a wide range of productivity tools including "QuickBar," which allows users to have easy access to frequently used Windows and 3270 functions such as session activate/deactivate, file transfer and a graphical keyboard editor. With "QuickBar," users can open and/or save session profiles, send/receive files or customize the keyboard layout with the click of a mouse.
Other INWW productivity tools include: "QuickExec," which allows users to launch all 3270 sessions plus any other Windows applications by clicking on a single icon; "QuickScript," which automates routine tasks such as logging on to a mainframe; "QuickPad," which enables users to create customized on-screen keypads for their most frequently used keys as well as scripts and macros; and "QuickHits," which allows commands to be sent to the host by clicking on the associated program function (PF) key on the right host display.
In addition, INWW can be used with DCA's QuickApp for Windows to create custom applications to integrate a wide range of management information through a single, graphical user interface. For example, using QuickApp's support for the High Level Language Application Programming Interface (HLLAPI), INWW and Microsoft's Visual Basic, an inventory management application can be quickly and easily created to enable NetWare for SAA gateway users to easily obtain and manipulate host information. QuickApp isolates the corporate developer from the complexities of communications programming allowing she or he efficiently provide end users with innovative solutions.
For organizations with multiple computing platforms, INWW has the same user interface as DCA's IRMA WorkStation for Windows (IWW) which provides consistent "look and feel" and support requirements for the DECnet SNA gateway from Digital Equipment Corp.; the VINES Communications Gateway for 3270 from Banyan; the SNA LAN gateway from Eicon Technology Corp.; as well as DCA's own Select Communications Server and IRMALAN/EP gateways.
