DAVID NAGEL TO LEAD APPLE'S SOFTWARE DIVISION

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced that Dr. David C. Nagel, 47, will lead the company's Macintosh Software Architecture Division (MSAD).
This division is responsible for the development and marketing of system software, tools, and extensions for Apple's Macintosh brand of personal computers. Nagel has been senior vice president of Apple's Advanced Technology Group (ATG), responsible for developing new hardware and software technologies. The position of senior vice president, MSAD, had been held until recently by Roger Heinen, who left the company earlier this month.
In his new role, Nagel will direct MSAD and serve as acting head of ATG until a successor, who will report to Nagel, can be named. Nagel's new title is senior vice president and general manager, MSAD and ATG. Nagel will report to Michael Spindler, Apple's president and chief operating officer.
"David Nagel is an exceptional executive--he combines a sophisticated vision of future technology with a pragmatic understanding of what customers need today," Spindler said. "He has done an outstanding job of converting Apple's research projects into marketable products. By placing both our software and advanced research activities under David we believe we will enhance our efforts to integrate state- of-the-art technologies into our software platform."
Nagel will remain a member of Apple's executive management team.
