DAVID H. CLARKE NAMED DEPUTY CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF HANSON INDUSTRIES; JOHN G. RAOS TO BE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

DAVID H. CLARKE NAMED DEPUTY CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF HANSON INDUSTRIES;
 JOHN G. RAOS TO BE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
 NEW YORK, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Lord White, chairman of Hanson Industries, the U.S. arm of Hanson PLC (NYSE: HAN), today announced that David H. Clarke has been named deputy chairman and chief executive officer of Hanson Industries and John G. Raos has been promoted to president and chief operating officer.
 Lord White said, "I've worked closely with David for many years in building Hanson Industries from a modest base in 1973 to rank among the larger industrial companies in the U.S. Both he and John, who has been with Hanson since 1976, are superb managers and skilled practitioners of the Hanson philosophy. Their leadership will augment the success at Hanson Industries well into the future."
 Lord Hanson, chairman of Hanson PLC, in welcoming the new appointments, said, "These two directors exemplify all that is excellent in our North American companies. They make a strong personal contribution to all our activities both in the U.S.A. and on the board of Hanson PLC."
 Clarke, 50, has served as president and chief operating officer of Hanson Industries since 1978, having joined in 1973 with his family business, J. Howard Smith Inc., Hanson's first U.S. acquisition.
 Clarke serves on the boards of Hanson PLC, Hanson Industries, Smith Corona Corporation and MariFarms, Inc.; the national advisory board of Chemical Bank; and the board of trustees of Rumson Country Day School. He is also a member of the New York Yacht Club. In 1991, he won yachting's One Ton World Cup in Belgium and also was a member of the
U.S. Admiral's Cup Team. Clarke graduated from Hobart College in 1965.
 Raos, 42, a CPA, joined Hanson Industries from Price Waterhouse, where he began his career. He has held important financial and managerial positions at Hanson Industries, including chief financial officer, vice president and treasurer and, since 1987, has been senior vice president responsible for Hanson's North American operations.
 Raos is a director of Hanson PLC, Hanson Industries, Smith Corona Corporation and Marifarms, Inc. Born in New York City, he received his B.A. in Accounting from Queens College in 1970.
 Hanson PLC is a British-American industrial management corporation. Hanson's North American operations had revenues of $7.1 billion in 1991 with operating profit of $1.0 billion. Its operations include SCM Chemicals, Peabody Coal, Powder River Coal, Cavenham Forest Industries, Beazer USA, Jacuzzi, Grove Crane, Ames Tools, Endicott Johnson Footwear, Hanson Lighting Group, Kaiser Cement, Weber Aircraft, Farberware Cookware, Tommy Armour golf equipment and Gold Fields Mining, among others.
 In the United Kingdom, Hanson companies include Imperial Tobacco, Ever Ready Batteries, ARC Aggregates, London Brick, Butterly Brick, Smith Meters and Beazer Homes.
