DAVID BANKS: Is Issy there? Oh yes he is.

PANTO memories have been prompted by my recent statement of hatred of modern panto, particularly those starring local radio DJs and reality TV cast-offs.

Charlie Roberts, of Llandudno, writes: "Your article on pantos reminded me of one I went to see in 1946 at the Empire Liverpool. I only went because Issy Bonn was in it.

"He was top of the bill, as indeed he always was. Anyway I sat through this show, I think it was Snow White, eagerly awaiting (40s crooner) Issy Bonn to make an appearance"The interval came and went, still no sign of him, then at the very end, with about 10 minutes to go, the Fairy Queen said to Snow White, "I will grant you any wish you like" and Snow White said "I would love to hear Issy Bonn singing 'The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot."' "He came on, sang four songs and that was it! He was dressed in an evening suit and had nothing to do with the story at all. Needless to say we loved it."

Fantastic, great to know that ham-fisted plot devices were as popular then as they are now
