DATASOUTH COMPUTER CORPORATION ANNOUNCES EARNINGS

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Datasouth Computer Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DSCC) announced net income of $289,000 or $.05 per share for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1993, compared to a net income of $167,000 or $.03 per share for the same period last year. Revenue for the third quarter totaled $4,611,000 representing a 14 percent increase from the same period last year.
For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 1993, the company's net loss totaled $(464,000) or $(.08) per share compared to a net income totaling $559,000 or $.10 per share in 1992. Revenue for the first nine months in 1993 totaled $11,670,000, a 2 percent decrease from the same period in 1992.
Jim Busby, president of Datasouth, commented on the results saying: "We are pleased to return to profitability this quarter. Our investment in our new Documax printer family has begun to pay dividends. As we announced previously, we were awarded a contract to supply Documax printers to the SABRE Travel Information Network, a division of American Airlines, under an agreement expected to exceed $10 million over 5 years. We are bullish that the momentum generated in this past quarter will continue to build for the remainder of 1993 and on into 1994."
Commenting further, Busby added, "We are also excited that our affiliate, Gray Communications Systems, Inc., recently announced that it has been chosen as the winning bidder for television stations WKYT in Lexington, Ky., and WYMT in Hazard, Ky., both CBS-affiliated stations ranked number one in their respective markets." The closing is conditioned upon approval and consent of several parties, including the FCC. Gray presently owns three VHF NBC-affiliated television stations, a daily newspaper and a fixed-base operation at the Albany, Ga., airport. Datasouth owns 647,140 shares of Gray's outstanding common stock, which is approximately 21 percent.
Datasouth designs, manufactures and markets heavy-duty printers used primarily with multi-user micro, mini and mainframe computers for heavy- duty, print intensive applications. The company sells its products worldwide through distributors and value-added resellers, and directly to large volume major accounts.
