DATAPOINT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OFFER MINX ROYALTY-BEARING LICENSES

SAN ANTONIO, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Datapoint Corporation (NYSE: DPT) announced today that it has begun to offer royalty-bearing licenses under its videoconferencing patents. A pioneer in videoconferencing, the company owns five United States patents which it believes give it broad coverage in switched videoconferencing. A Multi- point Control Unit (MCU) is typically used to provide switched videoconferencing linking three or more sites. The company also stated that it has corresponding patents issued or pending in a number of foreign countries.
The company was careful to point out that while the licensing program emphasis is initially focused on switched videoconferencing involving three or more sites, the coverage of the patents is not necessarily limited to those products and uses, but also includes other videoconferencing products and applications.
Datapoint has recently announced significant additions to its MINX line of video communication products, including its MINX LINK(TM) point- to-point system. The company has also strengthened its research and development, marketing, sales, and support organizations in anticipation of what it believes to be an opening market for desktop, LAN-based video communication systems. Datapoint began marketing MINX in the mid-1980's.
"One of the many actions that we took in preparing ourselves to take our place as a serious player in the industry, was to conduct an in-depth review of our patent coverage. We concluded that a large number of the systems and services using MCU's to link multiple sites appear to fall under the umbrella of our patents," said Doris Bencsik, Datapoint's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "We therefore feel that we should pursue this matter to a logical next step by seeking licensing and royalty payments from those who are manufacturing, using or selling our legally protected inventions."
Datapoint declined to provide details about its position on royalties and other terms before discussing them with the product and service providers. The company mentioned that it planned to obtain royalties from the provision of services to the public, and from the manufacture, use, and/or sale of equipment. The company also stated that in some cases it may be interested in considering cross licenses and technology exchanges as part of the program.
Datapoint, a leader in providing computer-based networking, telephony, and video communication technologies, markets its products and services in 49 countries worldwide.
