DATAMAP, INC. AND INSURANCE SERVICES OFFICE EXECUTE 15-YEAR CONTRACT
MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- DataMap, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: DTMP) and Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) announced today the signing of a 15-year agreement to offer a national system to electronically provide geographically-based information to insurers.
The Geographic Underwriting System (GUS(R)) project links DataMap's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology with ISO's insurance underwriting and other insurance information.
GUS technology has already been pilot-tested and is available for use in Florida where GUS reports include fire, wind, automobile, and crime insurance information. DataMap and ISO expect to expand GUS services nationally in 1993 and add information on earthquake hazards and community demographics, as well as other insurance-related information.
Under the provisions of the agreement, DataMap and ISO will equally share revenues. Both companies will also equally share the incremental costs of GUS project development through the term of the agreement. In addition, the agreement provides mutual exclusivity for both partners.
DataMap has right of first refusal to provide future geographic information systems products and services to ISO. Similarly, ISO has right of first refusal to distribute DataMap products and services for which ISO has corporate capabilities.
DataMap is responsible for providing and maintaining the GUS application software and underlying geographic databases, digitizing hazard and risk data, and maintaining the backup system. ISO's responsibility includes delivery of the GUS product to customers through its national telecommunication network, invoicing, collections, provision and quality control of ISO proprietary data for the GUS project, marketing, sales, and training.
DataMap's President, Gary S. Mertz, said: "This long-term agreement validates DataMap's position as the definitive provider of GIS services for the insurance industry. It also provides the structure for future large-scale industry-specific applications, which will benefit from DataMap's geographic databases, digitizing techniques and software tools."
Philip D. Miller, ISO's Chief Actuary and Senior Vice President of Special Products noted: "For the cost-conscious property/casualty industry, GUS technology is the cornerstone of an underwriting workstation that provides insurers more complete and accurate hazard information in seconds. That means improved productivity in underwriting. Most importantly, however, accuracy and completeness should result in improved loss ratios and increased revenue. GUS technology is focused on improving the bottom line."
ISO provides advisory and statistical information and services to U.S. property/casualty insurers. Its 1,500 participating insurance companies write more than 80 percent of all property/casualty insurance in the United States.
DataMap, Inc., based in Eden Prairie, Minn., specializes in digital geographic databases, mapping services, and related application software. DataMap's stock is traded over-the-counter in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
