DATAKEY, INC. NAMES WETZEL DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY AND STRATEGIC PLANNING

 MINNEAPOLIS, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Datakey, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: DKEY) announced today that it has named Richard M. Wetzel director of technology and strategic planning. In this newly created position, Wetzel will be responsible for all engineering and new technologies, as well as strategic plans. He reports to company President Michael A. Carenzo.
 Wetzel comes to Datakey with extensive international experience in engineering management and strategic product planning. Prior to joining Datakey, he served as vice president for DataCard Corporation, where he managed new product development and was responsible for planning and implementing new manufacturing technology. Earlier, he held engineering management positions with Rosemount Inc. and MTS Systems Corporation. Wetzel also has served as an adjunct professor in mechanical engineering for the University of Minnesota and has published numerous technical papers.
 Carenzo said, "Wetzel brings additional management strength and technical depth to the company that will be critical as Datakey develops more sophisticated systems and products to support our market needs. His experience in managing new product development teams and implementing strategic initiatives will play an important role in achieving our growth objectives."
 Wetzel has a bachelor's degree in business and engineering as well as a master's degree in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois in Urbana. He also holds a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
 Datakey, Inc. designs, produces and markets specialty-class portable data carriers in the form of keys, cards and custom-shaped devices to OEMs in an applications-oriented marketplace. These small, semiconductor-memory-based, portable devices serve as a convenient way to provide machine-readable information for use in a variety of microprocessor-based equipment. The company's portable data devices are packaged to withstand the adverse elements found in transportable human environments. Datakey also designs, produces and markets supporting peripheral equipment for these portable data carrier devices. Shares of Datakey's common stock are traded on the NASDAQ/NMS under the symbol DKEY.
