DATAKEY, INC., RECEIVES ORDER FOR GENERAL MOTORS

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Datakey, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: DKEY) today announced that it has received an order to supply a significant quantity of memory keys for General Motors' (NYSE: GM) South American operation. GM plans to use the keys for tracking warranty service on new vehicles. The initial order, valued at more than $300,000, will supply one South American country for one year. This pilot application could be expanded into a multi-year program covering other countries as well.
Datakey president, Michael A. Crenzo, said, "We are pleased to be a supplier for this important, new program and look forward to working with General Motors in the months ahead. We are especially pleased with this opportunity since it was the first major order generated by our new worldwide sales organization, which was established in early 1993. We are encouraged by this progress and anticipate developing similar opportunities in other targeted industries through our new sales representatives."
Datakey memory keys serve as an effective way to collect and verify vehicle-specific service records due to the rugged construction of the keys, which ensures reliable data collection and retrieval in dirty automotive environments. In addition, the convenient size of the keys permits consumers to carry complete warranty records on the vehicle key ring, so records are readily accessible.
Carenzo added, "This order is the first major automotive application to use Datakey's portable data devices. As such, it will introduce our technology to a potentially large new group of users who stand to benefit from the improved efficiency and accuracy that can be achieved by tracking warranty service with Data Keys."
Datakey, Inc., designs, manufacturers and markets portable-memory- based systems, subsystems and custom-designed components for security- driven markets. The company's proprietary memory keys, cards and other- shaped tokens serve as a convenient way to carry electronic information and are packaged to survive in portable environments. These products enhance security and simplify equipment use for a wide range of applications by automating critical identification, data collection and control functions. Shares of Datakey's common stock are traded on the NASDAQ-NMS under the symbol DKEY.
