DATACOMP ANNOUNCES 'INTELLIRAID' -- NEW RISC-BASED DISK ARRAY; AIDS USERS IN 'RIGHT-SIZING' SYSTEMS

VIENNA, Va., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- DATACOMP of Vienna has announced the immediate availability of a line of RISC-based RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) products to assist businesses and organizations looking to "right size" computer systems away from outmoded mainframe technology into today's PC-based systems.
Marketed under the IntelliRAID trademark, the disk arrays are based on a unique and totally non-proprietary hardware solution to data security and continuous data operation problems. The "fault tolerant" arrays guard against disk failures, seamlessly switching operations from one disk to another. The arrays, which can be tailored to specific systems, feature redundant power supplies and cooling fans for each disk drive, non-stop processing on a failed drive, and in-flight disk recovery.
An IntelliRAID configuration effectively quadruples available maximum storage capacities on any computing platform. IntelliRAID, in its largest configuration, yields an upper limit operating net usable capacity of more than 400 gigabytes per SCSI host adapter, making it the most flexible solution for users requiring large amounts of fault tolerant on-line mass storage.
IntelliRAID differs from other available arrays because it offers compatibility with more computing platforms than any other disk array on the market. It comes ready to work flawlessly on Unix, DOS, OS/2 Novell, VMS, Sun or virtually any other platform. As a hardware-based product, IntelliRAID is completely compatible with all bus architectures, including VESA, EISA, MCA, NuBus, VME or others.
Sample pricing for an IntelliRAID 4 gigabyte subsystem is $19,500, including a manufacturer's one-year, on-site warranty maintenance policy.
Experts estimate that as users "right size" their network and main frame operations, demand for redundant array technology will grow from a current $4 billion annual level to more than $10 billion by 1994. DATACOMP President Clay Kime said the IntelliRAID non-proprietary approach will enable the company to capture a measurable share of that growing market.
"IntelliRAID production is expected to generate hundreds of new, high-paying union jobs. All components used in producing IntelliRAID are manufactured in the U.S., supporting tens of thousands of additional manufacturing jobs throughout the country," Kime said.
DATACOMP unveiled IntelliRAID at the Union Industries Show on May 14-17 in St. Louis. Current availability is direct through the manufacturer. Stocking by nationwide distributors is expected in the third quarter.
