DATA ON COMPUTERS DAMAGED BY WORLD TRADE CENTER BOMBING MAY BE RECOVERED: ONTRACK OFFERS SERVICE FOR DATA RECOVERY AND RESTORATION

MINNEAPOLIS, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- World Trade Center computer users who discover that their computer hard disk drives have sustained fire-related or other physical damage may be able to recover usable data from even severely impaired drives. Data may be restored from computers that have soot, moisture and halon damage, or that appear melted and beyond repair, according to Stuart Hanley, engineering manager for Ontrack Data Recovery, Inc.
Hanley offered the following advice to computer users who discover that their drive or data may have been damaged by the bombing:
-- Do not attempt to operate a visibly damaged hard drive. As Hanley explained, "In this state, the drive and data are both extremely vulnerable and the drive should not be run without the supervision of an engineer attuned to symptoms of distress." In the case of smoke exposure, the same principle holds true for systems without visible damage. "Data platters exposed to soot and moisture particles may be irreversibly damaged if not recovered in an air and static controlled clean room."
-- Do not use diskettes or tapes that have been exposed to heat, moisture or soot. Again Hanley cautioned, "To ensure a successful data restoration, any diskettes or tapes that are suspect need to be properly cleaned. Even minute particles on data tracks can gouge the media and destroy data."
-- Do not attempt to recover data with commonly available utility software programs. "Under these circumstances, even minor manipulations may collapse any hope for a successful data recovery," reported Hanley.
-- Do not shake or remove the cover on the hard drive assembly. "This may void the drive manufacturer's warranty and aggravate the already fragile condition of the data platters. The drive casing should only be opened in the controlled environment of a clean room," said Hanley.
In the event of a disaster, the loss of valuable data is more critical than ever. Often, many or all of the computers contained within a business are damaged -- along with the backups -- multiplying losses and compromising normal business operations dramatically. In a study measuring the ability of businesses to perform basic functions following a computer disaster, the University of Minnesota found the following: a 30 percent decline in productivity among business without data access for two days, and a 90 percent drop after a 10-day period.
"For businesses that are stalled until accounting records, customer information, or engineering data can be restored, the costs of a recovery operation are almost always less than the cost of downtime, and of rekeying lost data," reported Hanley. Ontrack can return usable data to customers quickly -- immediately when on location -- avoiding a costly and lengthy downtime period.
Ontrack's 24-hour support includes the ability to dispatch data recovery engineers to any location for immediate on-site data restoration. The firm has an extensive success record, having recovered data from hard disk drives, floppy diskettes, and tape backups that have become inoperable due to mechanical or circuit failures, software problems, and damage suffered through fire and other disaster conditions. Costs for the company's data recovery services normally depend on the complexity of the recovery problem, however, discounted and expedited service is planned for bombing victims. In addition to Ontrack's 24-hour support and on-site service, they have established a hotline number (800-872-2599) for World Trade Center customers.
The company can restore data from computers with DOS, NetWare, Windows, Macintosh, OS/2, Unix/Xenix, Sun, DEC, Wang, Banyan Vines, and other operating platforms, as well as from tape backups and removable media systems. Ontrack Data Recovery is also authorized by major hard drive manufactures to open and service drives under warranty.
Ontrack Data Recovery offers the most advanced technology for retrieving data from any PC, network, or alternative storage device, including tape backups. Services support virtually every operating environment, and include weekend, priority and on-site capabilities. Its parent company, Ontrack Computer Systems, specializes in hard disk utility software, including installation and data recovery tools for the NetWare, DOS, Macintosh and Unix environments.
