DATA ON COMPUTERS DAMAGED BY MIDWEST FLOODING MAY BE RECOVERED: ONTRACK OFFERS ON-SITE SERVICE FOR SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL DATA RECOVERY

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Midwest flood victims who discover that their computer hard drives have sustained water-related or other physical damage may be able to recover usable data from even severely impaired drives, according to Stuart Hanley, engineering manager for Ontrack Data Recovery, Inc. Hanley offers the following advice to computer users who discover that their drive or media may have been damaged by the flooding:
-- Do not attempt to dry the drive out by opening the disk or exposing it to heat. Drives should be opened and dried only in a class 100 clean room environment by a trained engineer.
-- Do not use drives, diskettes, or tapes that have been exposed to moisture. Hanley cautions, "To ensure a successful data restoration, any drives, diskettes, or tapes that are suspect need to be properly cleaned. Even minute particles on data tracks can gouge the media and destroy data."
-- Get the drive to a professional facility as soon as possible. "The best scenario would be to have the user send the drive before it had completely dried. Depending on the type of water in which it was submerged, contaminated debris may dry on the platter, making recovery more difficult," explains Hanley.
In the event of a disaster, the loss of valuable data is more critical than ever. Often, many or all of the computers contained within a business are damaged -- along with the backups -- multiplying losses and compromising normal business operations dramatically. In a study measuring the ability of businesses to perform basic functions following a computer disaster, the University of Minnesota found a 30 percent decline in productivity among business without data access for two days, and a 90 percent drop after a 10 day period. Ontrack can return reusable data to customers quickly -- immediately when on location -- avoiding a costly and lengthy downtime period.
Ontrack Data Recovery specializes in recapturing data from any hard drive, network, optical drive, floppy diskette, or magnetic tape backup suffering from electro-mechanical failure and/or data corruption, and offers an unsurpassed rate of success on media accepted for recovery. Ontrack's headquarters are located at 6321 Bury Drive, Eden Prairie, Minn., 55346, 800-872-2599 (612-937-5161). Regional service and sales centers are located in the United Kingdom and Irvine, Calif.
