DATA ON COMPUTERS DAMAGED BY HURRICANE ANDREW MAY BE RECOVERED
Ontrack Offers Solutions for Data Recovery
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Home and business computer users who discover their computer hard disk drives have sustained hurricane-related water or other physical damage may be able to recover usable data from even severely damaged drives. Data may be recoverable even from disk drives that have been under water or that appear to be beyond repair, according to Stuart Hanley, engineering manager for Ontrack Data Recovery, Inc.
Hanley offered the following advice to computer users who discover that their drives have been storm damaged:
-- Do not attempt to operate visibly damaged drives. Hanley explained: "In this state, the drive and data are both extremely vulnerable. The drive should not be run without the supervision of an engineer attuned to symptoms of distress."
-- Do not attempt to recover data with commonly available utility software programs. "Under these circumstances, even minor manipulations may collapse any hope for a successful data recovery," reported Hanley.
-- Do not shake the drive or remove its cover. "This may void the drive manufacturer's warranty and aggravate the already fragile condition of the data platters. The drive casing should only be opened in the controlled environment of a clean room."
In the event of a natural disaster, the loss of valuable data is more critical than ever. Often, many or all of the computers contained within a business are damaged -- along with backup copies of data files -- multiplying losses and compromising normal business operations dramatically.
Ontrack Data Recovery has successfully recovered data from disk drives that have become inoperable due to mechanical or circuit failures, software problems and damage suffered in natural disasters, including past floods in Chicago, Texas and the Ohio River Valley and hurricanes in the southeast United States. Costs for the company's data recovery services normally depend on the complexity of the recovery problem. However, discounted and expedited service is planned for hurricane victims. Ontrack has established a hotline number for this purpose: 800-872-2599.
"For businesses that are stalled until accounting records, customer information or engineering data can be restored, the costs of a recovery operation are almost always less than the cost of downtime and of rekeying lost data," said Hanley. Ontrack can typically return usable data to customers in two to five days.
The company can recapture data from computers with DOS, Novell, Macintosh, OS/2, Unix/Xenix, Sun, DEC, Wang, Banyan Vines and other operating platforms and from SyQuest, Bernoulli and other removable storage media. Ontrack Data Recovery is also authorized by major hard drive manufacturers to open and service drives under warranty.
Ontrack Data Recovery was established in 1987 and is the nation's leading provider of data recovery services. Its parent company, Ontrack Computer Systems, specializes in hard disk installation and utility software for more effective system management and maintenance. Both companies are headquartered at 6321 Bury Drive, Eden Prairie, Minn.
