DATA GENERAL TO GET NINTH ISO 9000 QUALITY CERTIFICATION

WESTBORO, Mass., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Data General Corporation (NYSE: DGN) said today that its Special Systems Division has been recommended for ISO 9000 quality certification by Underwriter's Laboratories.
The Special Systems Division will become the ninth organization within the company to receive the ISO quality certification. This includes all of Data General's worldwide manufacturing, repair and distribution operations.
ISO certification has become the international standard for quality product design, manufacturing and service. The guidelines were established by the International Standards Organization (ISO), based in Geneva.
Data General's Special Systems Division, which is based in the company's Westboro headquarters, is responsible for designing customized hardware to meet specific customer needs.
"The ISO certification gives Data General a strong competitive differentiator. This is particularly true in Europe where ISO certification is becoming the quality benchmark and increasingly a customer requirement," said Ronald L. Skates, president and chief executive officer for the company.
"The fact that we will receive another ISO quality award is doubly pleasing to us, because it recognizes the commitment that Data General has to provide its customers with the highest-quality products and service."
In addition to the Special Systems Division, the following Data General operations have either already received or have been recommended for ISO quality certification: manufacturing plants in Apex, N.C.; Southboro, Mass.; Chihuahua, Mexico; Manila, the Philippines; and Schwalbach, Germany; and the company's European subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
To achieve ISO registration, Data General's worldwide operations have undergone a rigorous and lengthy audit process. They have been evaluated on a variety of functions including commitment to quality, statistical techniques and the quality of the components built at each of the plants.
Data General is a leading worldwide supplier of computer and storage systems for business, industry, education and the government. The company reported revenues of $1.12 billion in its fiscal 1992 year.
