DANCE: Best of Ailey Programme.
Firebird was conceived by legendary French choreographer Maurice Bejart for the Parish Opera Ballet in 1970. The restaged version received its Ailey premiere earlier this month. It uses the Stravinsky score but the traditional fairytale was refashioned as an allegory of revolution in the light of events in France in the late 60s.
The Golden Section dates from 1983, but is also having its Ailey premiere this month. Choreographed by Twyla Tharp, the piece runs together four propulsive songs by David Byrne of Talking Heads fame and is quite simply the most exhilarating group dancing currently to be seen anywhere on the planet.
Revelations is the troupe's signature piece and has become an enduring classic. There is an extraordinary insight into African-American culture through the suite of spirituals first choreographed by Alvin Ailey in 1960.
