 DANA MEAD NAMED NEW TENNECO COO; MOVES FROM INTERNATIONAL PAPER
 HOUSTON, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Tenneco Inc. (NYSE: TGT) has elected Dana G. Mead, 56, as Tenneco's chief operating officer and a member of the board, effective April 1. He was formerly executive vice president and director of International Paper, headquartered in Purchase, N.Y.
 "Dana Mead is an outstanding addition to Tenneco because he is a leader, a strategic thinker and a results-oriented guy," said Michael H. Walsh, Tenneco president and chief executive officer. "He's proven that wherever he's been. He will play an important role in moving Tenneco towards our goal of consistent profitability and growth.
 "Dana has demonstrated his leadership and teamwork as a three-sport all-state athlete, as a 'distinguished cadet' at West Point, as a decorated combat officer in Vietnam, as an advisor in the White House, and as a key participant in the major corporate change process which has propelled International Paper to leadership of its industry in the past several years. He has earned the reputation in the business world as an extremely able implementer. He is both a strategist and a get-it-done guy.
 "He joins a strong team of corporate and division executives who are already in place at Tenneco. We have a lot of work to do and I'm just delighted that Dana has agreed to join us as we move into the future," Walsh said.
 Mead will immediately assume the title of chief operating officer, a new position at Tenneco, and will have primary responsibility for Tenneco's operating divisions. On May 12, when Tenneco Chairman James L. Ketelsen retires, Walsh will become chairman and CEO and Mead will be named president and COO. Mead will work with Walsh and senior corporate and division executives on issues associated with Tenneco's longer-term strategic future.
 At International Paper, Mead served as executive vice president since 1988 in the pulp and paper sector, the company's largest unit. He joined IP in 1978, was promoted to vice president, Human Resources, in 1979, and served as senior vice president of the white papers group from 1981 to 1988.
 From 1974 to 1978, Mead was professor and deputy head of the Social Science Department at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point; from 1972 to 1974 he was deputy director of the Domestic Council in the administration of President Richard M. Nixon; from 1970 to 1972 he was associate director of the Domestic Council and a White House Fellow.
 From 1957 until 1970 he served with distinction in the U.S. Army with tours of duty in West Germany and Vietnam, where he received numerous service and combat decorations and awards and achieved the rank of Colonel. While in military service, he also earned his Ph.D. in Political Science and Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his B.S. in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, in 1957.
 Mead and his wife, Nancy, will be relocating to Houston soon. The couple has two adult sons, Dana, Jr., and Mark. Tenneco Inc. is a Houston-based diversified industrial corporation whose operating divisions include Tenneco Gas (natural gas pipelines), Case Corporation (farm and construction equipment), Tenneco Automotive (automotive parts), Newport News Shipbuilding, Packaging Corporation of America, Albright & Wilson (chemicals), and Tenneco Minerals.
