DAMES & MOORE AWARDED $4.5 MILLION ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES CONTRACT FOR PROPOSED NAVAJO TRANSMISSION PROJECT

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Dames & Moore (NYSE: DM), international engineering and environmental consultants, has been awarded a $4.5 million contract extension over the next two years with the Dine Power Authority (DPA) of the Navajo Nation for preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the proposed Navajo Transmission Project.
The Navajo Transmission Project is a proposed 420-mile-long, 500-kV transmission line, which will begin in the Four Corners area of New Mexico, cross northern Arizona, and end near Las Vegas. The line will allow for the transmission of power generated in the Four Corners area to reach the load centers in southern Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California.
Ownership for the project is proposed as 40 percent (or less) Western Area Power Administration (Western) and 60 percent DPA. DPA is an enterprise of the Navajo Nation responsible for developing energy projects of this nature. DPA has retained Groves, Wray & Associates of Albuquerque, N.M., to provide project development services for this project.
Dames & Moore is conducting environmental impact assessments and mitigation planning for approximately 2,000 miles of alternative transmission line corridors. This information will be used by Western and DPA in the selection of the final transmission route.
The EIS will address issues such as cultural resources, biological resources, land use, visual impacts, socioeconomics, soils, geology, paleontology, noise, and electromagnetic fields. Sites of particular concern within the study area include various national parks, monuments, and wilderness areas, as well as some highly populated areas.
Western (SLC) is the federal lead agency. Cooperating agencies for the EIS will be the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, and Hualapai Tribe.
Previously, Dames & Moore assisted DPA with a regional environmental feasibility study using environmental studies already conducted for other projects within the 38,000-square-mile area to help identify the alternative routes.
Dames & Moore is a worldwide professional services company, providing comprehensive environmental and specialized consulting and engineering services. The company had gross revenues of $343.8 million in fiscal year 1993 and maintains offices throughout the United States and 19 other countries.
