DAIMLER-BENZ CHAIRMAN REUTER CALLS FOR NEW ERA OF ECONOMIC
 AND ENVIRONMENTAL COOPERATION
CHICAGO, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Edzard Reuter, chairman of the board of management of Daimler-Benz AG, told the Executives Club of Chicago here today that to be competitive and successful in the emerging global economy, major corporations must establish a worldwide presence based on a fundamental concern for the environment.
Reuter also emphasized the need for healthy worldwide competition among global trading partners, unfettered by political protectionism.
"The spectre of large free-trade zones or blocks forming...is a threat we must nip in the bud," Reuter said. "The industrial nation's embrace of protectionism will impede worldwide economic progress."
Reuter linked his concern over international trade tensions to the need for businesses to be increasingly sensitive to the environment. He said the business of environmental preservation will produce "the next fundamental, worldwide, long-lasting period of economic growth."
However, few companies will be willing to undertake "the gigantic risks accompanying capital investments for new global technologies and products" in a protectionist environment, Reuter said.
Daimler-Benz, of Stuttgart, Germany, is one of the world's largest industrial concerns. It integrates four high-technology corporate units: Mercedes-Benz AG, AEG AG, Aerospace AG and Daimler-Benz InterServices (debis) AG. In 1991, Daimler-Benz had consolidated sales of approximately DM 94,700 billion and employed about 375,000 people.
