HIGH SCHOOLS

Antelope Valley

With signing day three weeks away, standout Antelope Valley quarterback Johnny Walker doesn't have a football scholarship offer for college. Walker is getting interest from San Diego State and Nevada. He thinks the schools are waiting for him to get a qualifying SAT score before they offer. Walker, who has been studying every lunch and sixth period, plans to take the test on Jan. 25. Walker played quarterback, free safety, punter, kicker and kick returner for Antelope Valley. But his option style at quarterback isn't suited for most colleges and he is too small in build to be a running back. Schools are recruiting him as a defensive back.

Littlerock

With starting goalkeeper Evelyn Lopez lost for the season to a knee injury and backup Krystal Hitt-Clark not in attendance, the girls' soccer team had to switch around a bit for Thursdays game against Palmdale. Into the net went freshman striker Ana Artega, the team's leading scorer. And Artega responded by making 22 saves in Littlerock's 4-0 loss. Artega played without goalie gloves but looked like a pro at the position, according to coach Leslie Killinger.

Palmdale

The girls' soccer team claimed playoff position Thursday with a 3-2 victory over Lancaster. Palmdale broke open a 1-1 game with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half by Trista Wagner and Ashley Thomas. Palmdale (9-4-2, 2-1) is now alone in third place in the Golden League behind Quartz Hill and Highland, which are both 3-0. Palmdale plays at Quartz Hill on Tuesday.

Paraclete

The Spirits' sports teams will take a break from their various league schedules with final exams approaching next week.

The school's most successful winter team, the boys' soccer team, is probably the only team not looking forward to the break in games. Ranked first in the Southern Section Division V after beginning the year unranked, the Spirits will play just once next week, Friday at Crossroads in an Olympic League match.

Quartz Hill

After a slow start, the boys' soccer team seems recharged with the addition of new coach Tony Bruce.

The defending Golden League Champion Rebels (8-5-4) are looking to prove they are a much improved team, beginning Wednesday against Palmdale at 6 p.m.
