Pienciak and editors Hap Hairston and Charles Sennott have initiated and are leading a task force to investigate the slaying of Manuel de Dios Unanue, an aggressive reporter who was assassinated in a Queens, N.Y. restaurant. Calling it "The Manuel de Dios Project," journalists from El Diario/La Prensa, WCBS-TV Channel 2, and WXTV Channel 41 have joined the News' team to investigate all leads and share information daily. In a joint statement all reporters agreed "to break down the walls of competition to form a more united pressure to make sure his (Manuel de Dios Unanue's) killers are brought to justice." According to the team, the killing of Manuel de Dios Unanue has sent a "shockwave through the world of journalism and a chill over all citizen's First Amendment right to freedom of speech." Meanwhile, in a related story, reward money for the arrest and capture of those responsible for Unanue's assassination has reached $62,000.
