DAILY NEWS: KEVIN MAXWELL RESIGNS AS CHAIRMAN AND PUBLISHER
NEW YORK, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Kevin Maxwell announced today that he was stepping down as chairman and publisher of the New York Daily News, effective Jan. 1.
Ian Maxwell, Kevin's brother, also will resign from the board on Jan. 1.
Maxwell said that the plans to reorganize The News into a healthy business were well under way, permitting him to withdraw from leadership of the company.
"I'm enormously proud to have been associated with The Daily News and the City of New York," said Kevin Maxwell. "I value the relationship I have had with everyone at the paper and know that their future is well-assured.
"The effort to breathe new life into The News is in the good hands of its management, in partnership with its unions. Now that the environment for the long-term restructuring is in place, it is essential that the leadership be in the hands of those who can be 100 percent available."
Remaining members of the board are Editor James P. Willse, who will succeed Kevin Maxwell as chairman and publisher; Larry L. Bloom, chief operating officer, and Jay Swardenski, general counsel. Willse will remain editor of the newspaper.
"I am delighted that Jim Willse has agreed to take over," said Maxwell. "He is a fine leader."
The board will meet in the near future to elect outside directors to fill the vacancies left by Kevin and Ian Maxwell.
