DADDY'S GIRL; First pictures of Cam baby.

HE kissed her tenderly on the head, rubbed his nose against hers and beamed the kind of smile that only a new dad can.

Prime Minister David Cameron introduced his fourday-old daughter Florence to the world yesterday - and even the most cynical observers forgot their usual jibes about spin and joined in the collective "Aaaah!" Public relations men weren't needed at this photocall. Their past attempts to portray the Eton-educated PM as Ordinary Dave haven't always paid off and many voters have found it hard to warm to the toff in Number 10.

But yesterday Mr Cameron, 43, managed to connect with the British public without even trying. All he had to do was go with the Flo - cradling Florence Rose Endellion in his arms and letting the photographers snap away.

Village Some of the poses may have had a cheesy hint of that 1980s Athena poster of a doting dad and baby. But most simply showed a father bursting with pride.

Mr Cameron was clearly overwhelmed by his 6lb 1oz daughter's "unbelievable beauty" and delighted that she and mum Sam were out of hospital and enjoying the rest of their Cornish holiday.

And, of course, there was the unspoken relief that Florence has been given a clean bill of health.

Last year the Camerons were devastated by the death of their son Ivan, six, who suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy.

Florence, given the name Endellion after the village where the Camerons have been staying with their other youngsters Nancy, six, and Arthur Elwen, four, is only the third child to be born to a serving Prime Minister since 1849. Ten years ago Tony Blair was photographed in a remarkably similar pose with newborn son Leo - but his ear-to-ear grin was nothing to Mr Cameron's smile.

Sam, 39, gave birth by caesarean section four hours after being driven to Truro's Royal Cornwall Hospital for what she thought would be a routine check-up.

Florence's brother and sister were said to be "bouncing up and down" with excitement about their new sister. Something else for dad to smile about.
