DAD IS MY RAF BOSS; EXCLUSIVE.
A FATHER and son have become the first to serve together with the same RAF squadron.
Flight Sergeant Richard "Taff" Lane, 45, and 18-year-old Steven will soon be off to Afghanistan.
It means Steven, a senior aircraftman, is having to get used to calling his dad Flight - short for his rank. He admitted: "It's a bit weird. Sometimes I will call him Dad at work and Flight at home by mistake.
"Some of the lads think I get away with a bit, but others think I have to prove myself more as I don't want to embarrass the old man."
The pair - who serve with 15 Squadron RAF Regiment, based in Honington, Suffolk - will jet out to Kandahar air base.
Proud dad Taff has already served in Iraq, but both will be going on their first tour to Afghanistan. He said: "I have confidence in Steven. The training we get now is a lot better than that which I got for Iraq." Steven joined the squadron a year ago and is about to marry his fiance, who is pregnant with their first child.
But he and his dad will be spending Christmas and New Year 3,500 miles away in Helmand. Taff's wife Karen - Steven's mum - said it was "wonderful" that her husband and son were in the same squadron.
She admitted: "I am a bit apprehensive about them both going out, especially as they will be away over the festive period. But I am proud of them."
