DAD'S THRIFT, GOOD GROOMING LESSONS ON SHOE CARE CAN PAY OFF TODAY
WALTHAM, Mass., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Remember Dad's lessons about putting your best foot forward with good grooming and about the importance of thrift? Here is one way to make this advice pay off handsomely today.
In fact, Bob Oginz, president of Biltrite/Cat's Paw Company, says Dad may very well have suggested the same thing if he gave particular attention to his shoes and told you to do the same.
"Remember your favorite shoes? They're comfortable, still in fashion, durable and perhaps of better quality than what you can replace them with today," Oginz says. "Shoes take more punishment on a regular basis than any other part of a wardrobe, jeans included. But properly cared for, they'll last for years."
Dad would certainly approve of the common sense approach... preserving and renewing shoes again and again. And doing it inexpensively. Good care goes beyond keeping your shoes dry and polished. Shoes require regular, preventative maintenance and occasional repair, saving money in the long run. Depending on the quality and original cost of the shoes, they can be inexpensively renewed dozens of times over a number of years. For example, to replace heels, the most common repair, averages $4 for women's shoes, $8.50 for men's.
"Most of us grew up with a disposable attitude regarding our clothes and shoes...when they wear out, throw them away," says Oginz. "Today, however, value is in, excess is out. Reuse, renew and recycle are the watchwords."
We're also betting that these tips on shoe maintenance from Biltrite/Cat's Paw are right in line with Dad's:
-- Heels and soles should be serviced or replaced before they wear out completely and before holes appear.
-- Rubber "soleguards" can be attached over leather soles for increased moisture and sole protection, better comfort and slip- resistant safety on wet surfaces.
-- Conditioners can be used to soften leather to keep it feeling and looking new.
-- Soles and insoles of athletic footwear can be easily and inexpensively repaired.
-- The height of women's heels can be changed to improve comfort and to take advantage of the latest fashion trends. Damaged or marred heels can be restored to new condition. Shoes can be dyed.
-- "Unrepairable" one-piece-sole shoes can, in fact, be repaired inexpensively.
-- The comfort of your favorite shoes can be upgraded by replacing leather soles with cushioned rubber soles.
-- All footwear can be weatherproofed.
At the first signs your shoes need servicing -- uneven wear on shoe heels or toes, worn-thin soles and marring or scratch marks on women's heels -- Oginz says, "It's best to consult any of the 16,000 or so professional shoe care/repair centers in the U.S. Shoe care centers are expert at diagnosing footwear problems and providing an array of quality, cost-effective solutions."
