D&P PREVENTS THEFT OF CABLE SERVICES FROM MODEM SUBSCRIBERS.
A simple switch is all cable companies need to stop the newest breed of cable pirates. The latest crime wave hitting the cable industry involves thieves who hook up to Cable Modem Service and get cable video services for free. The industry loses revenues and the thieves are rewarded for their ingenuity. Not so fast says Gunther Diefes, vice-president of D&P Manufacturing. D&P's new patented technology solves the problem. An off-premise intelligent switch controlled by a computer in the head-end, allows for independent control and monitoring of every channel on the system. "This addressability feature allows a cable operator to prevent theft of services before it even gets started," Diefes explained. A related benefit of this technology is that "Cable Operators will be instantaneously able to determine the number or percentage of households within a system watching a particular program at any given time, providing operators with the data to support their claim for additional advertising dollars," Diefes added.
The system also allows previewing of premium channels, a feature that should attract a greater number of viewers. Additional features include impulse pay-per-view and separation of the channel surfing and security function as recently mandated by the FCC.
Based upon Patent #6,067,440, recently awarded to Diefes, D&P Manufacturing, is developing the technology which can be easily installed into existing cable plants with little modification.
